Review:
Fondly remembered in the porn industry, the late Buck Adams aspired to more than just routine sex movies, as evidenced by this decently-budgeted suspense feature, worthy of consideration as a real film, not mere porn filler.
He stars and also directed, from a fine screenplay by the usually facetious/who cares? Cash Markman -easily one of his better works. Voiceover-narration by heroine Rebecca Wild sets up the story, after a meticulously designed static opening shot, held for over 3 minutes, that subtly and stylishly creates the neo-noir mood.
Shot in Malibu, it presents a different take on the "thrill killer" theme, most recently portrayed successfully on screen in "Natural Born Killers" and "True Romance", both from scripts by Quentin Tarantino (whose work I despise). But this Adult film is better, period.
In his flashy Cadillac convertible, escaped con Buck picks up beautiful Rebecca and she turns out to be amoral enough to fall for him, psychotic killer and all. In flashback we see him off the swinger couple of Brad Armstrong and Dyanna Lauren, typical of an A-list cast.
FInding ads for Swingers in the newspaper is how Buck finds his marks, to rob and kill them without (until later in the film pangs of conscience occur) compunction. Police procedural elements with cop Tony Tedeschi and FBI agents Jonathan Morgan & Steven St. Croix are handled well, without any of the expected humor occurring.
A solid chase & helicopter climax is punctuated by plenty of exploding blood packs more impressive than many a mainstream B-picture. Buck handles his nutso Good Ole Boy role skilfully, and acting is solid down the line.
