Review:
Quasi-documentary that looks at the sex industry in Europe. Features interviews with people who make or take part in retro pornographic films, publish sex magazines, or supply erotic stills, in Britain, the Scandinavian countries and Germany. Also shows two blue movies being made.

This was made by the (in)famous, pioneer British director John Lindsay, who we can see recruiting and photographing a new young actress (Maureen O'Malley, in the nude) and directing a small group of performers while filming a hardcore loop (Wet Dream).

Porn was still illegal in the UK (and most of Europe) at the time, so Lindsay and those working for him were risking serious prison time for simply participating in the filmmaking. There are extensive interviews with random people on the street, with the performers in porn films, other film directors, producers, and magazine publishers. We go from London to the home of porn entrepreneur Joop Wilhelmus in Dordrecht (Holland), to the Reeperbahn sex club strip and a hardcore photography studio in Hamburg (Germany), interviews with a sex club owner and the publisher of Private Magazine in Stockholm (Sweden), and views of the shops and nightlife in the busy "porno capitol of the world" at that time, Copenhagen (Denmark). We end up at the offices and studios of another famous porn pioneer, Lasse Braun. Braun's English was not very good, but his interview is still interesting. And we get to watch the filming of one of his loops, with a couple of performers who Braun's fans will probably recognize. Some of the interviews and photo sessions drag on a bit too long. But in general, this is a fascinating look at the beginnings of porn's golden age -- and a time capsule of an era when public attitudes were rapidly changing towards more openness and tolerance.
