“Naked Came The Stranger”, the second of the films made by legendary auteur Radley Metzger using the pseudonym ‘Henry Paris’, is a bona fide classic of the true golden age of adult films. Inspired by the notorious best-selling book of the same name, it follows the sexual exploits of radio host Gilly Blake (the effervescent Darby Lloyd Raines in a career best role) who is determined to get even with her philandering husband Billy (Levi Richards) in a series of torrid affairs with their friends and acquaintances. Set in swinging 1970s New York, the film features a series of daring escapades taking place at an elaborate fancy dress ball, an exquisite old-fashioned ballroom, and even on the top floor of a double-decker bus as it drives around Manhattan in plain daylight. Sizzling sex, stunning cinematography, wonderful locations, and Metzger’s trademark humor make this one of the truly great cinematic achievements of this or any other era. When the female half of a married, television interviewing team (Darby Lloyd Rains) finds that her partner and husband (Levi Richards) is cheating upon her with a production assistant (Mary Stuart), she sets out upon a quest for sexual self-exploration and gratification. Of course, there are plenty of bumps along the way, as she goes from one bizarre encounter to the next, until she ultimately finds what she's looking for...which may be much closer to home than she actually thinks. Such is the case in "Naked Came the Stranger", a very good, 1975 release from DistribPix and acclaimed director Radley Metzger. As much a "true" film of its era as it is a porn film, this production is certainly unique. Indeed, it is at times comical and lighthearted, at times serious and real, and at other times downright odd. There are segments that don't fit as well as they may have originally been envisioned--like the lengthy cut to "silent movie mode" prior to and during the eighth sex scene--and there are others that are borderline perfect--such as Darby's stairwell masturbation near the beginning of the flick. Often, it feels as though eroticism is sacrificed for artistic merit, perhaps needlessly so, and the hottest of the actual sex--by far--plays out in the final two sequences. Almost certainly, this one is going to appeal to diehard fans of the Golden Age, as it is a "classic" and a feature if ever there were one. As such, it's worthy of a watch, but it equally certainly won't be for everyone...particularly those accustomed to more modern, sexually-focused adult fare. People will either love this or hate it. There will be very little middle ground. In terms of sex, Scene One finds Darby Lloyd Rains playing with herself out in the stairwell of the apartment building in which her hubby, Levi Richards, and a production assistant, Mary Stuart, are having an affair. As she listens in on their sappy sex talk, she slides fingers into both her pussy and ass. In Scene Two, a partygoer dressed up as an Arabian princess, Rita Davis, gets hold of the bartender, John Buco, in the wine cellar and blows him until he ejaculates on her lips and chin, all as Darby watches in. Scene Three has Darby trying to do the same with a different bartender, David Savage, whose dick is unresponsive to her and her fervent sucking. In Scene Four, Levi and his mistress, Mary Stuart, get down to business in her apartment, with the latter playing the role of the aggressor (oral, vaginal; she jerks and sucks him to pop in her mouth). Scene Five features a porn star whom Levi and Darby are interviewing, Helen Madigan, in a clip from one of her films, blowing a dude and taking a facial. In Scene Six, Darby hires a bus to drive around the city, as she ultimately talks a neurotic friend, Alan Marlow, into letting her blow him to completion whilst they're seated in the back (facial). Scene Seven brings together Mary and Levi again, this time in her bed, as she gives him oral and he plays with her b-hole. To finish off the fuck, Richards sticks it to her and unloads on her tummy out of missionary. In Scene Eight, Darby lands a suave, smooth-talking friend, Gerald Grant, that she's had her eye on for some time. Their affair takes place in a large, windowed room with a classical feel and is done in a silent, black-and-white style that started a bit prior in the buildup to this sequence. While certainly unique--and artistic--this abrupt change in pace ultimately disrupts the flow of the film and detracts from it (oral, vaginal). Scene Nine couples up Darby, dressed initially in a top hat and tuxedo, and Mary, her husband's lover, who follows suit and dons a frilly costume of her own. Of course, the former seduces the latter fairly quickly, and a soft and sensual (...for the most part....) lezzing ensues. (Best sequence of the film.) In Scene Ten, Levi and Darby rekindle their spark in the bedroom to close out the production (oral, vaginal; pop on her pussy, reinsertion as he's still ejaculating). Another hot one! (Too bad that all of the scenes weren't as strong as these last two.)
