Review:
Beautiful and vulnerable young Susan (a terrific and affecting performance by the gorgeous Shawn Harris) suffers from a radical dual personality disorder: She alternates between being a demure good girl, and her more brash and shameless nymphomaniacal alter ego, Sandra. Sympathetic psychiatrist Dr. Mark (superbly played by 70's hardcore super stud Harry Reems) tries to get Susan to come out of her fragile and frightened shell. Writer/director Fred Donaldson brings an admirable and unexpected warmth and sensitivity to the subject matter which in turn adds a substantial depth and poignancy to the movie: The sex scenes for the most part are genuinely erotic (the sole notable exception is a brutal and disturbing flashback rape sequence), the characters are well drawn, there's a strong mood of despair and instability evident throughout, and the startling surprise ending packs a powerful emotional punch. This picture further benefits from exceptionally sound acting from a capable cast: Reems and Harris do sterling work in the lead roles, the delectable Jennifer Jordan is a deliciously naughty treat as Mark's brassy and lascivious girlfriend Leslie, Neil Flanagan excels as harried, yet friendly asylum administrator Bill, Kristen Steen contributes a solid turn as the sweet nurse Carrie, and Jamie Gillis and Alex Mann are truly chilling as a couple of vicious rapists. Saul Casella's striking picturesque cinematography makes inspired occasional use of stylized slow motion and freeze frames. Scott Mansfield's melodic score and lovely soft-rock soundtrack are likewise fine and effective. Kudos are also in order for Donaldson's sharp and snappy editing. Highly recommended.
