Review:
The Adventures of Buttman is the first of the Buttman films from Evil Angel and John Stagliano. More recent followers of the series may be surprised to find out that the original Buttman film, which started gonzo films as we know them today, is a feature film. This is not to say that this is the first adult film to feature this style of filming, but this is one of the ones, if not the one, which made the style popular.
Evil Angel has put the recently created extended cut of the film on this disc which is great as it offers viewers a big reason to upgrade from their VHS copies of the film. The original version of the film ran for an hour and 55 minutes, and the extended cut runs for two hours and twenty minutes meaning that roughly 25 minutes of additional footage has been added into the film. The extended cut flows nicely and since they went back to the original BetaCam masters for the entire print, the added footage doesn't stick out in the film. My only complaint about this, which is very small and most viewers probably don't care about it, is that the original version of the film isn't included on the disc. I'm a purist when it comes to films and I always like to have the original version of a film as well, even if the transfer isn't as good and it is just on a DVD-5. Like I said though, this is a very small complaint overall.
This is a fun film that is decidedly different from anything else that was on the market at the time, or even now for that matter. Most of the story is shown through the camera of the character of John, which makes the film unique and since this is a plot-based feature, it even makes it different than the gonzo genre that it spawned, as I haven't seen any other films that have utilized this method of storytelling in the adult industry. The plot, although simplistic works well for the film and does more than just add filler between the sex scenes.
The film features some nice-looking women that play well to the camera and the acting in the film is rather good as well, then again, it features some cast members that have proven time and time again that they can handle material well. The film has some excellent tease sequences, which John Stagliano has become known for making over the years, that add to the sexual heat of the film. Especially Tracey Adams's tease towards the end of the film.
The sex scenes themselves are well done and although they are tamer than much of what John Stagliano makes these days, they are still just as hot and enjoyable. The sex scenes have a voyeuristic feel to them do to the filming style and how they fit in with the plot. This voyeuristic feel adds to the scenes and I felt that it makes them more enjoyable. The sexual themes in the film are vaginal and anal sex with anilingus (male to female and female to female), male masturbation, blow jobs, toys (anal and vaginal), lesbianism, pussy eating (male to female and female to female), titty fucking, anal masturbation, anal fingering, and pussy fingering. For viewers that care about condom use, there are no condoms used in the film.
Having missed this movie in its original form but being well aware of its importance, I was especially keen to see for myself what is essentially the naissance of gonzo . I was not disappointed. Sure, The Adventures of Buttman has its flaws from a technical standpoint, and yeah, maybe it does seem a little sedate by contemporary standards. But for its simple idea that the camera should represent the Buttman character's perspective, not just a passively observant window on a fantasy world, well, the importance for contemporary porn is incalculable. On a personal level, the notion that the wide and cumulative influence of this movie and its successors indirectly saved me from having to tolerate crappy plots, bad acting and sundry distractions from my real interest in porn, the girls, is eminently praiseworthy.
It's also interesting to compare it with John's latest mould-breaking creation, The Fashionistas, and to ponder the significance of each, and even if there's no direct comparison between the content of each movie, both stand as landmarks in porn film history. Personally, while accepting this is a technically inferior movie, I simply like it more. I have a better feeling about it, perhaps a certain sense of nostalgia for times gone by, but it's just a much more approachable piece while still possessing a strong sense of eroticism.
I can understand that some viewers will find it looks dated and the sex is far from being a total rampage. Indeed, the sex scenes are shorter and there is only one full anal scene, but the focus is as much on the girls and some outstanding tease. Besides, the Tianna and Jamie scene shows that less is more, perhaps - physically weaker but psychologically strong, the action may not be so full on but it's still so creatively kinky and intense and the efforts of the players lend it an extra credibility. Generally too, the cast is so good, mainly apparently having a whale of a time, and good acting performances by Jamie Gillis, Tom Byron and Randy Spears are contrasted neatly by the allure of Tianna, Tracey Adams, Champagne and Bionca in particular - so damn sexy.
The other aspect of this movie that I think is most important is that other directors today could still learn from its style and more importantly from John's stated focus. I'm not suggesting anyone else copies the movie, though obviously so many did, I just think there's an attitude here that people should rediscover. I can't help thinking that in a market seemingly obsessed with complying with trends and filling niche market demands, the idea that John simply went and made the movie he wanted to see himself still has so much value. I wish more people would take this approach today, then we might see something just as unique as this.
For anyone with an interest in the development of adult movies, this is a must-see. That said, I don't generally watch porn to be impressed or reminded of some historical significance, I watch it to be entertained and hopefully turned on. In that regard The Adventures of Buttman still stands up as a enjoyable, sexy and varied movie - it's just great fun!
