Review:
Joe Sarno is a name that usually makes me think of soft, moody European vignettes and sweeping emotional builds, so seeing his name attached to something this aggressive is honestly a bit of a trip. You can see his fingerprints in the way the women interact when the guys aren't around, like that first scene with Carol Cross and Danielle where the intimacy feels almost tender for a second. It makes me wonder if he was just trying to pay the bills here or if he genuinely wanted to see how his style would mesh with the more hardcore demands of the Video X Pix crowd.
Annie herself is just such a powerhouse of personality that she manages to carry the whole thing, even when the camerawork starts to look like it was handled by someone mid seizure. There is this one specific moment in the first scene where she is just locked in, focused on Carol and Danielle, and you can see that genuine spark of joy in her eyes that made her a star in the first place. She has this way of controlling the rhythm of a scene that feels totally instinctive, like she is conducting an orchestra with nothing but her body and that infamous mouth.
Why did they let the lighting get so muddy in the middle? It drives me crazy because Taija Rae shows up looking like an absolute goddess, and half the time she is practically swallowed by shadows in the corner of the frame. She and Annie together should have been a world ending event, and while the energy is definitely there, I found myself squinting at the screen like a frustrated history professor trying to decipher a faded scroll.
Bobby Astyr brings that weird, jittery energy he always had, which actually works surprisingly well against Annie's more grounded presence. Their back and forth in the final act has this frantic New York pace that feels authentic to the title, even if the logistics of the room get a little crowded and chaotic toward the end. I noticed a stray coffee cup on a side table during the couch sequence that totally took me out of the moment for a second, but then Joey Silvera started doing his thing and I was right back in it.
I keep coming back to the scene with Joe Santini and Klaus Multia because the double penetration sequence feels so much more intense than the rest of the film. It is a total shift in tone from the playful group stuff, and Annie handles it with a kind of professional ferocity that reminds you why she was the headliner. It is a weirdly lopsided movie, bouncing between Sarno's lingering, appreciative gaze and the blunt force of eighties gonzo, yet I know I will probably end up throwing it on again just to see Taija and Annie share the screen one more time.
