Review:
James Bond on screen displayed marked improvement from his DR. NO debut to the followup FROM Russia WITH LOVE, arguably the best ever in the series. Private dick JOHNNY WADD had the sophomore blues with his clunky second entry FLESH OF THE LOTUS.

Filmmaker Bob Chinn was already coasting, regurgitating stock elements which were to recur in later editions of the dozen or so popular porn series. But the cast and story this time are for the birds.

Vaguely oriental setting and mood are created in the opener, where blonde Sheila is masturbating, wearing an Eastern robe, on what appears to be a junk in the harbor. She's smoking a long opium pipe and uses a large dildo to pleasure herself, when Chinn himself steps in to slit her throat. We don't see the cut or blood (at this point), and it's clear Chinn took the role less from ego-tripping than to save on an actor's salary.

Wadd, wearing his trademark buff-colored Panama hat, arrives at Sheila's apartment to investigate the murder, and now she's covered in blood. He deduces that she was murdered elsewhere and moved here, and takes on the case for Jim Alexander, a friend of hers.

Sheila was a junkie, and it appears the murder was drug-related. A flashback shows her a year ago in happier times, shtupping Wadd. The unknown bleached-blonde performer playing Sheila likes to giggle (John Holmes as Wadd even remarks on this fact as part of his narration), and is okay in the sex department.

Chinn reverts to his normal piracy with dramatic music lifted from Ennio Morricone's THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY playing during Holmes' money shot. He uses the same musical cues in the next Wadd feature THE BLONDE IN BLACK LACE, also drawing from Morricone's FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE.

Alexander suggests he visit a lesbian, Billy Mae Randall, to get further info about Sheila's recent doings, and Wadd drives his Porsche over to her pad. Billy Mae is played by a nondescript MILF with horrendously fake eyelashes, but okay nipples. She shows Wadd her preference by masturbating with a double-dong dildo, but the Waddster will have none of that, disrobing to show her the real thing.

Billy Mae acquiesces to give John a try, though she finds it difficult to ride his soft-soft member. After another money shot, she suggests he question another friend of Sheila's.

Wadd visits Suzie, played by lovely Andy Bellamy who was impressive in the first JOHNNY WADD feature but wasted here. She's wearing a beaded neck collar in place of her trademark cameo choker.

Andy recalls in flashback a scene of her humping Alexander in order to pay (in trade) for drugs he was pushing and she couldn't pay for. He (unaccountably) tells her in this flashback of an upcoming $500,000 opium deal he's involved with alongside Sheila.

Holmes heads back to Sheila's place, where Alexander is searching the bedroom suspiciously. After sucker-punching Jim, Wadd finds a ring which he recognizes belongs to the secret Lotus Society, so he heads to Chinatown to follow the drug trail.

The VCX DVD edition runs 8 minutes longer than SWV, but plays as if it's identical, because all the scenes are there in both, but the sex footage runs longer. The VCX video box has a photo of Annette Haven (in oriental garb) on the cover and fraudulently trumpets her appearance in the film, but she's not in it. She was underage in 1971 when it was shot and her career did not begin until two years later.
